Say hello to the new boss [Mar. 30th, 2004|06:01 pm]
Ten years ago today, or near enough to suit, entrippy was born. Why, at the time, I couldn't have told you. In retrospect, he acted as a a persona to both mask my fears and discomforts and as an avatar of myself perfected. Adam Kadmon, if you're so inclined. A Fiction Suit for entering the hyper-global-mega-net if you prefer that metaphor.

Somewhere in that ten year cycle I fused with entrippy and became the persona, for good or bad. Certainly, it's done me pretty well so far.

Nonetheless, my vision of an ideal avatar has changed a lot since those days. I've changed a lot. Entrippy has served his purpose well, and earned his rest. So here he speaks his last.

"Thanks to everyone who's come along for the ride,"

And that's it. He's all emotional, though - and emotions have never been his strong suit. Seems strange to let him go with a whimper, rather than a bang. Yet in a lot of ways he went a long time ago, and this is just the finalisation of the formalities.

You can follow the new me, bare as bones, over at [info]morganjaffit

(no subject) [Mar. 25th, 2004|09:48 pm]
I only ever really knew Greg Rickards through his works. They were grand things, living games of the finest kind. He's one of the people who shaped my GMing style, and thereby set me upon the road I am now on. He was asked, and agreed, to run a game for Egocon, way back when.

I will remember him as a man who brought nothing but joy to my life, and who made my world richer. Farewell Greg, I appreciated every moment.

Robo [Mar. 23rd, 2004|02:56 am]
I was going to make one of those "oh no! Those crafty japanese are making robots, and we know what robots do, don't we children? KILL ALL HUMANS!" kinda posts when I first saw this piece of video.

Then I watched it all the way through, and I swear there were nearly tears in my eyes. I live in the future. As a child I never wanted anything more than a world with dancing robots, I realise now. Brought up on science fiction novels, Astroboy and Doctor Who on the ABC and a healthy dose of wonder, I had only simple desires.

But the entire scienctific community seemed determined to head in the wrong direction. Where's the fun in industrial robotics? Sure, they make cars faster, but they don't dance. The robots who did dance turned out to be merely automata running throught their paces, nothing more nor less than the creations of such mechanical wizards as Robert Houdin in the distant past. This however, is something different. This little ripper (who has a homepage here) dances.

And somehow, that makes me want to dance too.

EDIT : <a href="http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2003/1218/sony_06.wmv >Here's</a> a video with even more dancing. Four of the little suckers doing a better job than most boy bands.

Location shift [Mar. 20th, 2004|11:44 am]
So, I'm a going to Montreal, to work @ Ubisoft. On what, I don't know if I can say as yet - but it's extending an existing francise.

As yet, I don't know timeframes, nor do I have an actual, bone fide plan as it were. I'm off to Daylesford for the weekend, and will hopefully see many people in the coming weeks. My rule of thumb estimate for getting a visa organised is four weeks, but we'll see what we see.

There's a whole lot of stuff I should recap, including the Caravaggio, The Passion, and the bits and pieces - but I'm not going to do so now. Maybe later, if you've all been good.

Tomorrow, tomorrow [Mar. 14th, 2004|11:11 pm]
Monday, 15th March, 12:30 out the front of the gallery. Be there, or remain UNARTED!

Which is to say, see you there, I hope.

EDIT : 11:30am @ the Shanghai Dumpling House, is, I believe, the Thorf plan. I'll be there too, as getting a meal in first sounds peachy

EDIT TAKE 2, VENGENCE OF THE EDIT : Erm, got the date wrong. It's right now, though. You'd hardly notice.

It's just filled with good things, oh yes.

Caravaggio [Mar. 10th, 2004|02:59 pm]
I don't know much about art, but

No really, I don't know much about art. However, I notice that the National Gallery has a Caravaggio exhibit starting tomorrow. It's both not very expensive ($18) and I've heard of this Caravaggio bloke, so he must be famous. The gallery has even been so kind as to provide educational kits (PDF's can be found here) so by the time it comes around I may know more than I know now.

Which is nothing.

The real point of this matter is, who wants to go see art with an ignoramous? At the moment, I'm thinking Monday during the afternoon (yes, I realise this makes things hard for those of you who are gainfully employed - sorry) unless that meets with furious denial or someone has a better idea.

Gay marriage [Feb. 28th, 2004|12:04 pm]
Is the topic du jour, so here's my 2c.

Marriage as a social entity is just that. If people choose to view you as married, good on them. If they don't, such is as it is. It's an individual choice, with individual definitions.

The law, on the other hand, is a different matter. "Married"[1] couples get special privileges under the law, which homosexual couples are barred from receiving. I think all couples should be treated equally - by removing all special legal considerations that currently apply to "married" couples. Said benefits mostly exist to support the raising of children, ultimately - there was a time when marriage was ubiquitous with "place you raise children" - but no longer. Society has moved on,[2] and the law should likewise.

So, take away all the privileges currently enjoyed by "married" people - and give them to "Parents" (ie, people currently in the process of raising a child). Problem solved.

[1] In all examples, we're talking US law, which is the issue at stake here.

[2] How "special" is marriage these days, anyhow? you can get married and divorced in a couple of weeks - breaking a sharehouse lease with two peoples names on it is harder than that, from a legal perspective.

New Journal [Feb. 10th, 2004|03:02 pm]
I've started a new journal, to (in theory), contain my game development related rambles. This means that if you're interested in such, you should add [info]gamedesigner and if you're not, you shouldn't.

What does this mean for this journal? The answer to that should be "bugger all". Only time will tell, however.

And yeah, it has nothing but recycled content at the moment. Soon it will have actual for real content, promise.

Oh, and can you believe that a juicy name like "gamedesigner" wasn't taken? Came as a shock to me, lemme tell you.

Well now [Feb. 5th, 2004|05:07 pm]
Well, that certainly generated some interesting dialog. You guys rule, by the by. I want to do the ancient dance of "My friends are so smart and interesting, yours are so dumb and boring," right through the neighborhood. In fact, given it's Murrumbeena, I think I will. Back in a moment.

...

...

Dang, it's hot out there. I've worked up a sweat (and several weird glances) but I feel good.

On a completely seperate note, is there any evidence to suggest that pre Homo Sapiens Sapiens mankind had a spoken language? Or to suggest they didn't, for that matter?

Todays theorys [Feb. 4th, 2004|04:59 pm]
1. The more I read about Sanatana Dharma, the more it becomes clear that nigh on every form of Chaos magic is merely Hinduism with less style, scope, and history.

2. I don't think we ever get to space, at least not the way science fiction would have it. The sheer size of the universe means that if it was possible to crack the whole "zip back and forth from star to star with the greatest of ease" then odds are someone else would have got there first. In which case, they'd be running tourist trips to the sunny shores of earth by now.

Given that we're not yet an intergalactic zoo, only two possibilites remain. Firstly, against all probability, we're the first cab off the rank. Secondly, and looking much trimmer around the beard region, is that no-one ever gets to the "zipping from solar system to solar system" stage. Possibly, via ark ships, travel to nearby solar systems takes place - but not a lot more. The scales involved are so gob-smackingly epic that it's not really surprising., when you think about it.

I'm not sure whether the concept leaves me saddened or excited, really. Not that I'm anything like 100% convinced either way, but for today, it'll do.

Plans and trivia [Feb. 4th, 2004|12:24 am]
So, Kate is now safely ensconced in New Jersey, and I'm running about trying to join her - where exactly remains to be calculated, mind.

DDR for Friday - I say Galactic Circus, as it's just a nicer venue. The only question then becomes one of time - 6pm-8pm? Possibly later if people are super keen, but no promises. Meet around the DDR machine - sounds like we're going to have the numbers to scare off any other punks, which is a good thing. Is there anything going on Friday night worth heading to afterwards?

On a completely seperate note, I've been losing my desire for fiction recently. I've heard people speak of this before, but I never thought it would happen to me. It just seems that the world around us has more than enough amazing stories. Making them up is hardly necessary.

I've realised how ignorant I am of both history and religion (all of them, pretty much) and this is something I'm working on rectifying. So, heres todays "bit of history you probably knew about, but I sure didn't, so just in case, here's a quick synopsis". More to come as they tickle my fancy.

Firstly, I'm not sure how I managed to go through life without hearing about Hiraoka Kimitake, better known as the Yukio Mishima. Sure, he was one of the most "important" Japanese authors of the 20th century, but then I've never had a great deal of patience for "important" literature. On the other hand, masochistic, homosexual, body building, revolutionaries with a taste for ritual suicide are right up my alley.

I can't abbreviate things and still maintain the scope of his life, but suffice to say that he ended a very successful career as an acclaimed author by delivering the final pages of his final novel (The Sea of Fertility) to his publisher, gathered his private army (the Shield Society) to him and took control of a military hq in Tokyo. After giving a speech exhorting the military to rebel and reclaim traditional Japanese culture, he commited seppuku.

How the fuck did I miss *any* reference to this during my twenty seven years of life? What was I doing learning anal retentive quantities of information about the "World of Darkness" while the real world is filled with this sort of drama? Good lord.

Next on the list is Joan of Arc, methinks. I caught a reference to her on the Simpsons earlier, and realised I know nothing about her life, and very little about her death - she was burned at the stake, and that's all I know. I don't even know what the Arc was - was it a place, or the same one Indiana Jones was looking for? I'll let you know if I find anything interesting....

Seperation Anxiety [Feb. 3rd, 2004|01:34 am]
Kates gone, and I'm at a loose end for the first time in ... a long time. I'm maudlin, yet confident -- we're mightier than we've ever been, despite the tyranny of distance. The future is filled with excitement.

Yet I still can't sleep in an empty bed this evening. Better to burn the midnight oil and await news of her safe arrival, methinks.

UPDATE : Kate is home safe and sound, and I've now slept the sleep of the dead.

Journalism [Feb. 2nd, 2004|07:34 pm]
So, does anyone have a PS2 (or even an X-Box, but PS2 by preference) that I could borrow for a few days, possible a week? I've got ... research needs. Yeah, that's it. Research needs.

Also, I think [info]paracelsus was talking about getting to an arcade for some Dance Dance Revolution training sessions - if you're still game, I was thinking of dragging my unco-ordinated arse down the arcade sometime tomorrow. Who's up for looking like a fool?
